{Travel}: The Ruins and Market of Chinchero, Peru

Travel Peru

  Sunday May 26, 2013

After our short visit to Lima, we took a plane to a city called Cusco in the Southeastern part of Peru. The first day there, we were really sick because of the altitude (3,400 meters above the sea) so we spent most of the the day resting. The second day however we took a tour to Chinchero (one of the districts of Urubamba) to see some beautiful Inca ruins!

One of the things I enjoyed the most of Peru was all the beautiful scenery. The breathtaking mountains and vast green fields looked straight out of a postcard.

I also really enjoyed seeing the market of Chinchero. Peru has always been known for their colorful fabrics and their adorable Lamas, and the market was filled with merchandise showing both things.

Next up we got to see how the native Peruvian women make all of their pretty colorful fabrics. It was very interesting!

We also decided to enjoy a cup of hot Coca tea as we watched the presentation. For those of you who don't know, Coca tea is native to South America and it is made using leaves of the Coca plant (the same plant that cocaine is made out of). However, the tea is not like cocaine at all! The coca tea is a mild stimulant (like a cup of coffee or black tea) and it tastes kind of like green tea. Anywhoo, it was very enjoyable!

Stay tuned to see more photos of our trip to Peru! Next up is the ruins of Ollantaytambo!

  18. Yay Cusco ! and Perú, you can never get enough of it. Food is good, people are nice, so many Unesco World Heritage locations to visit. My personal faves are the Miraflores are in Peru, where you have soo many antique shops and Macchu Picchu, one can only wonder how life must have been like then.

    The incas were extremely smart,
You are looking colorful and pretty!

Everything is so colorful too - those blankets look so beautiful! I never heard of that tea and I didn't know they used that plant to make cocaine. haha

  31. Yes, I did! For the first two years of my college I studied Archaeology. It's more of a hobby now more than it was back then. I did a lot of traveling and had a lot of adventures! Though nothing like Indiana Jones (haha) but I did have my share of snakes. When I went to the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico in 06' - I went on a archaeology tour which I absolutely loved! I have always wanted to go to Peru- so hopefully someday! I really want to go to historical tour of Europe - particularly Italy first though. :)
